The Multiplier Reel gains its name from the geared line retrieval it uses, resulting in one crank of the arm turning the spool multiple times, enabling the Multiplier to reel line in far more quickly then other reel types. This makes the reel extremely effective for heavier work and fighting big fish, with often huge line capacity and ability to run a variety of lines such as braided multifilament, flurocarbon and mono. Multiplier Fishing Reels are also known for their effectiveness as boat reels, due to their capability of lifting heavy weights, and are commonly used, especially by sea boat anglers. Abu Multiplier Reels are among the best in the industry; the ABU 6500 is great for distance casting from the shore over sand, while the ABU 7000 serves it purpose for rougher grounds. Okuma Multiplier reels are also highly regarded for their sturdy construction, by sea and coarse anglers alike.
Baitcasting and the Baitcaster Reel
Multiplier Reels are also referred to as a baitcaster reel, particularly outside of Europe. With origins dating back to the 1600s multiplier fishing reels have truly earned their place in the fishing tackle box, and their design continues to improve, making them ideal boat reels and suitable for various other situations. One of the key elements of multiplier reels includes their high gear ratio, enabling fast retrieval of line, standardised at 4/1 but with even higher ratios on some reels.
