Delkim Bite Alarms – History
The Delkim company was formed in the late 1970’s between Del Romang and Kim Donaldson; consequently the name Delkim was born! The initial ambitions of these carp angling enthusiasts were not focused on producing Delkim alarms, instead the business was initially formed in order to gain bait ingredients and flavours that weren’t available to individual anglers in tackle shops. During this period they made valuable contributions to bait development launching new discoveries with flavours such as scopex (cream based flavour) and strawberry, before Delkim bite alarms had be conceived.
The development of Walker’s 1950’s Heron Antenna Alarm provided the basis for Delkim’s arrival and first steps into the bite alarm scene. The aim was to incorporate electronics into the alarm which they successfully did producing a ‘Heron Conversion’ featuring electronic circuitry, LEDS and GPO Speakers. The conversion famed Delkim and anglers sent their alarms to the company to be converted. Along with Delkim bite alarm conversions other tackle was being produced including the first carp sacks for retaining and weighing slings which helped contribute to the company’s evolvement.
The 1980’s saw the introduction of Optonic Bite Alarms, but similar to the Heron, inefficiencies within the alarms left people looking towards Delkim for help. Anglers once again sent their bite alarms to the Delkim experts who fitted them with revolutionary additions such as rotation sensors, minimal current drain, and most importantly improved reliability. The advances and improvements these new Delkim Bite Alarms created, set new industry standards and aided Delkim’s development as a specialist tackle company. Unfortunately, due to legal reasons, the conversions ceased in 1986 and this led to Kim Donaldson splitting from the company. However an idea developed by Del Romang in the 80’s took Delkim Bite Alarms to the next level and brought a whole new aspect into the bite indication world. It was of course the introduction of Vibration Technology. It took until 1992 to perfect the patented vibration system, and Delkim Alarms have used and improved it since.
Delkim continues to be managed as a successful family business (even the grandchildren are involved on a ‘product destruction testing’ level) and Delkim Bite Alarms continue to be regarded by many as the best in the industry.
